POWERGRID signs an MoU with BHEL

Secunderabad: State-run, Powergrid Corporation Limited (POWERGRID) has signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) to jointly research and development of power system equipment. The MoA was signed for collaborative research and development project on digital substation on Thursday at POWERGRID's southern region transmission system – 1, Kavadiguda, Secunderabad.

This agreement was signed by Executive Director (T&D) B. N. De Bhowmick, and General Manager, Head Corporate R&D, Dr CNV Ramana, BHEL, Hyderabad in presence of Avinash M. Pavgi, CGM (I/c), SR-I and other senior officials of POWERGRID and BHEL. As part of this MoA, Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs) and Optical Current Transformers (OCTs) will be developed which will be validated at POWERGRID Advanced Research & Technology Centre, Manesar and further field trials will be carried out at Bhiwadi 400/220 kV Sub-station of POWERGRID. This will enable the development of indigenous devices for digital sub-stations.

What are IEDs and OCTs?

Intelligent Electronic Device (IED) is a term used in the electric power industry to describe microprocessor-based controllers of power system equipment, such as circuit breakers, transformers and capacitor banks, while Fiber Optic Current Sensors (FOCS) & Optical Current Transformers (OCT) are the basic principle of FOCS and OCTs is to measure polarisation rotation due to the Faraday effect. The larger the electric current, the greater the magnetic field and hence the larger the polarization rotation.
