NTPC Mauda achieves 100 percent utilisation of fly ash

New Delhi: In order to ensure 100 percent utilisation of a polluting by-product produced during power generation, India's largest power producer, NTPC Limited, has started collaborating with cement manufacturers across the country to supply fly ash. The power producer is leveraging the Indian Railways' sprawling network to transport fly ash in an economical and environment-friendly manner. NTPC Mauda has recently become the first power plant of NTPC in the state of Maharashtra to send a massive amount of dry fly ash through rail.

The plant has expanded its footsteps towards ash utilisation by sending the by-product to cement manufacturers through railway rakes. It transported 3,186 metric tonnes (MT) of dry fly ash in 51 BCCW wagons to Rajshree Cement (a unit of Ultratech Cement) in Kalburgi, Karnataka.

During the financial year 2019-20, almost 23.57 lakh metric tonnes of fly ash was utilised for various productive purposes by NTPC Mauda. The power plant produces approximately 24-25 lakh metric tonnes of ash annually. Presently, 100 percent of ash is being utilised for the production of cement and fly ash bricks, construction of road embankment, development of low-lying land, and raising of ash dyke.

The present installed capacity of NTPC Limited is 6,2,910 MW (including 11,755 MW through JVs and subsidiaries), comprising of 70 NTPC stations (24 coal-based stations, 7 combined cycle gas and liquid fuel based stations, 1 hydro based station, 1 wind-based station), 25 Joint Venture stations (9 coal-based and 4 gas based) and 12 renewable energy projects. The company aims to achieve a total installed capacity of 130 GW by 2032.
