New Delhi: The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has extended the tenure of NTPC Limited's Chairman & Managing Director (CMD) Gurdeep Singh beyond February 4, 2021, till July 31, 2025. With this, Singh will be the longest-serving CMD of the state-run Maharatna PSU. The news came just two days after NTPC incorporates a new subsidiary for renewable energy (RE) business. According to sources, Singh's second term will start from 4 February 2021 and extended till 31 July 2025 which is the date of his superannuation. He had assumed charge as CMD of NTPC Limited on February 4, 2016.

Gurdeep Singh's profile

Gurdeep Singh has a remarkable academic background. After completing B.Tech in mechanical engineering from NIT Kurukshetra, he underwent a management education program from IIM Ahmedabad. He has also received management and leadership training from global institutions like Saïd Business School-Oxford (UK), Harvard-Kennedy School (USA), Darden School of Management, Virginia (USA), Singapore Civil Services College (Singapore) and ISB Hyderabad.

Singh has more than three decades of experience in the power generation sector. He started his career with NTPC Limited and has worked at various levels both in Indian and multi-national companies namely Powergen, CLP, IDFC, CESC and AES. He has worked in different areas of the power sector ranging from business development, projects and operations. Prior to joining NTPC, Singh was Managing Director of Gujarat State Electricity Corporation Limited.

The present installed capacity of NTPC Limited is 6,2,910 MW (including 11,755 MW through JVs and subsidiaries), comprising of 70 NTPC stations (24 coal-based stations, 7 combined cycle gas and liquid fuel based stations, 1 hydro based station, 1 wind-based station), 25 Joint Venture stations (9 coal-based and 4 gas based) and 12 renewable energy projects. The company aims to achieve a total installed capacity of 130 GW by 2032.
