New Delhi: Oil India Limited (OIL), India's second-largest national exploration & production company, has announced that it has successfully killed blowout in the Baghjan gas well in Assam. The news of relief comes after 172 days of a long and arduous struggle to contain the well-blowout.

In a tweet on Sunday, OIL said that a brine solution has been used to douse the flames. Brine is a high-concentration solution of salt (NaCl) in water (H2O). As of now, there is no pressure in the well and the same will be observed for 24 hours to see if there is any amount of gas migration and pressure build-up. Further, the operations to abandon the well is in-progress the petroleum PSU added.

OIL's Director (Exploration and Development) Dr P Chandrasekaran, Director (Operations) PK Goswami and Resident Chief Executive DK Das visited the Baghjan well site and had detailed discussions with the Experts from Alert and OIL team.

"More than 46,786 metric tonnes of crude oil has been lost due to the Baghjan blowout " an official spokesperson of OIL had said in an earlier statement. OIL had approached experts from Singapore to help stop the gas leak.

On Saturday, the oil PSU had informed the bourse about the hydrocarbon gas discovery in Assam. "The discovery will open up new areas for further oil and gas exploration in Assam and would help in enhancing the gas production with future appraisal and development activities," the company had said.
