DRDO Chairman flags off first indigenous heavy weight torpedo ‘Varunastra’

New Delhi: The Indian Navy is all set to include Indigenous 'Varunastra,' a heavy-weight torpedo, in its arsenal. The Department of Defence R&D Secretary & DRDO Chairman Dr G Satheesh Reddy flagged off the first Varunastra, the Heavy Weight Torpedo, at a ceremony held at BDL, Visakhapatnam unit, on Saturday.

On the occasion, a foundation stone was also laid by Dr Reddy for setting up of state-of-the-art central stores at Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL), Visakhapatnam Unit.

On the occasion, Vice Admiral K Srinivas, AVSM, NM, VSM (Project Director) Ship Building Centre, Dr Samir V Kamat (Distinguished Scientist & Director General) Naval Systems & Materials (NS&M) of DRDO, Dr OR Nandagopan (Outstanding Scientist & Director) of Naval Science & Technological Laboratory and other dignitaries from DRDO were present. BDL's Chairman & Managing Director (CMD) Commodore Siddharth Mishra (Retd), Director (Technical) NP Diwakar and other senior officials from the company were also present.

BDL is a Miniratna PSU under the Department of Defence Manufacturing, Ministry of Defence. The company is associated with DRDO for its various missile programmes. BDL is the production agency for Quick Reaction Surface to Air Missile (QRSAM), for which, trials were conducted successfully recently.
